About the Author :

Jeffrey Archer, whose novels and short stories include Kane and Abel, A Prisoner of Birth and Cat O’ Nine Tales, has topped the bestseller lists around the world, with sales of over 270 million copies. He is the only author ever to have been a number one bestseller in fiction (sixteen times), short stories (four times) and non-fiction (The Prison Diaries). The author is married with two sons and lives in London and Cambridge.

Author’s Note:

I had originally planned that The Clifton Chronicles would be five volumes, spanning a period of one hundred years (1920-2020). Only Time Will Tell fell neatly into place, covering Harry Clifton’s life from his birth in 1920 to the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. However, the second volume, The Sins of the Father, only managed to deal with the war as seen through the eyes of Harry, Emma, Giles,
Maisie and Sir Hugo, and came to a natural ending in 1946.

In the third volume, Best Kept Secret, Sebastian, Jessica, Lady Virginia, Major Fisher and Don Pedro Martinez march onto the page, and the story progresses until 1959 when disaster strikes both the Clifton and the Barrington families.

When I began to write Be Careful What You Wish For, the building of a luxury liner, the MV Buckingham, and the battle between Major Fisher and Emma Clifton, took on a life of its own, and by the time the ship is launched in 1964, Harry is only 44, and Emma 42, so I had to accept that I could not possibly tie up the next forty years in a single volume. Mea Culpa.

If I had to predict – and I’m still uncertain how many volumes it will take to bring it up to the present day – I cannot see it being less than seven volumes. But it will be the progression of the story, and not me, who dictates the final outcome. All I can say with any confidence at the present time, is Be Careful What You Wish For, the fourth volume of The Clifton Chronicles will be published in March 2014. After that, only time will tell.
